Sailing in the City

Eric Steinruck changes the wind indicator at the top of the mast of his friend’s boat before the evening race at the marina.

Captain Tom Sweeney is seen through the end of the boom tail and block of his main sail as he sails his boat during the Denver Sailing Club's weekly race.

Drew Smith organizes the sail that will power Tom Sweeney's Boat as the crew heads out onto the water. Smith is one of the many experienced crewmen who crewmembers turn to for help during the race. Smith, with daughters in college, can’t afford his own sailboat.

Captain Todd Brophy pulls in his spinnaker sail to get more power out of the gusting wind. Brophy is the owner of the marina at the Cherry Creek Reservoir and aimed to make the marina a center for sailing in Colorado.

With the week’s race over and the sun setting to the west, sailors and their crew head back to the marina to recount the day’s race.
